In December 1941, when the first reports about routine mass gassings reached London, a Foreign Office official wrote in the margin; 'Bolshevist Propaganda?'

The Allies didn't really want to know about it and seem to have seen it as a distraction from the war effort. Beyond announcing that they intended to punish those responsible they did nothing specifically to stop the Holocaust. Please see the related question.

they gave the Jews Israel

____

The Jews had to fight hard to create the state of Israel. It certainly was not a given as a consolation by guilt-ridden Allies. That notion is a complete myth.

_____

History said that the Allies were not aware of the extent of the Final Solution. That is wrong. As early as 1935-1938 we were full aware of the persecution. Once the war started and the Invasion of Poland saw the formation of ghettos and camps, the Allies were told by numerous OSS and British Intelligence agents about the actions and the future of the actions. Captured Germans and Gestapo agents were also forthcoming regarding the final solution. We knew of Auschwitz, Dachau and Ravensbruck.

However after the war started, we underestimated the amount of camps, the numbers being killed and the Einsatzgruppen actions in Russia. One of the biggest mistakes of Allied command was not bombing the rail lines taking Jews to the camps. But, even if we bombed the rail lines, their was nothing from stopping the SS from liquidating the Ghettos in place and imposing more killing squads for France and the low countries. People really underestimate the resolve of the SS in the Final Solution. They only wanted to extend the war for the purpose of killing more Jews. They knew the war was over. The Germans lost the war in 42'. The remaining 3 years was only withdrawal, set up a line, withdrawal and on and on. More men and materials were used for the Final Solution then for the defense of Germany in 1944-1945.

When reports in the early 1940s came to the Allies about the Final Solution, the Allies were initially very skeptical. Even when some of their skepticism abated in the course of 1942 they underrated the extent of the Holocaust.

The Allies knew that they could do little to directly affect the Holocaust, all that they could do was to win the war against Germany and her allies as quickly as possible to halt the Holocaust.
