How did the American revolution contribute to the start of the French revolution?

Because the American Revolution gave the people of France the believe that if the American could break away from their mother country England, which was one of the strongest in the world at the time, and having French soldiers participate in the American Revolution, gave them the idea that they no longer had to deal with King Louis XVI and that they could succeed taking over the government.

Since the colonists rebelled against the British due to oppressive, abusive maltreatment from King George III and his policies and succeeded, the lower class (i.e., the peasants, farmers, and traders) wanted better treatment from their mistreating government. After much social unrest, the French people finally revolted.
