It was all people of the United States, of the 1960's, not taking orders any more from the United States government, and everyone setting large protest all through out the United States, say no war, no reason. Especially the March on Washington, largest anti-war rally in U.S. history. Those who protested were called doves. Young men burned their draft cards.

Many young Americans, burnt their draft cards. The anti-war groups eventually got organized and planned and effectively demonstrated around the country and made sure they got their message heard loud and clear on the network's

evening news every night! This played right into the hands of the North Vietnamese and their ally, the Soviet Union. Even though they were suffering major losses in men and material, the American anti-war denomstrations stiffened their resolve to continue the fight, believing the American public would grow old of the war and the unpopularity of it! They proved to be right! We undersestimated Ho Chi Minh and the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong. Ho Chi Minh, was a legend among the North Vietnamese because of his direct involvement in defeating the Japanese in WWII, then the French in the 1950's, and finally war against the United States and the South Vietnamese. The war proved not only to be widely unpopular in America, but in Europe as well. General Westmoreland, the overall commander of American Forces, also played in the hands of the anti-war movement. He was constantly advocating more and more forces to be called up and sent to South Vietnam, claiming that victory was in sight only if he got more men and equipment. By July 1968, we had over 550,000 men in Vietnam with no end in sight. President Johnson finally had enough and refused to provide additional troops to be sent over their. The TET offensive in early 1968, shocked the United States. The communists were able to simultaneously, attacked multiple targets, including Saigon, and achieved quick success, without being detected by the Americans or South Vietnamese.

We finally defeated them militarily weeks later but lost politcally. After that, the American public had enough and Johnson decided not to seek reelection which ushered in Richard Nixon in Nov 1968 and the Vietnamization Program that gradually brought troops back to the United States and train the South Vietnamese to take over the war. Walter Cronkite was an influential journalist and respected by millions of Americans and he told the American people after the Tet Offensive, that we could never win the war. That was a decisive propa-

ganda victory for the North Vietnamese. The Vietnam War proved to be a col

lasal failure for the United States and its foreign policy. Over 58,000 men died in vain and over 200,000 were wounded-many seriously.

In the course of the Vietnam War:

  1. Young men refused to cooperate with the draft and tried to avoid going, not because of cowardice but because Vietnam seemed unending and to be a certain death.
  2. Young men who could fled to Canada to avoid the draft.
  3. Dissent was vocal and persistent, even in high school debates. The issues permeated US towns, with animosity toward politicians and unfortunately toward men who had gone to serve their country.
  4. College students and young adults held sit ins and other mostly non-violent protests.
  5. Kent State University students who were unarmed but protesting the war on campus were gunned down by the Ohio National Guard (May 4, 1970); 4 were killed, many injured.
  6. Newspapers reported on the "conflict" every day. TV news brought live broadcasts from war zones-- chilling scenes of horror and despair, including for US Servicemen who were pledged to serve.
