The Antipodes Islands were named by Captain Henry Waterhouse and crew, on the British ship Reliant, as the first Europeans to discovered them in 1800.
The name was originally Penantipodes from Latin paene:almost and Greek anti: opposite and podos: foot, because it is the nearest land to the antipode of London. An antipode has the exact opposite latitude and longitude, and is on the opposite side of the earth from a location.
The islands are the true antipode of a point in the English Channel off the north coast of France. The closest land is Point de Barfleur near Cherbourg in Basse-Normandie.
