The battle started on August 23rd 1942 when German and Romanian armies tried to capture the Caucasian oil fields using Stalingrad as a flanking lynch-pin to the offensive. Instead, Hitler changed tactics, using his mobile panzer divisions in an urban battle. This attack was reinforced and started with heavy attack by the Luftwaffe. The reason for the need for oil fields as for the Nazis to keep on attacking the USSR, they need closer oil mines to refuel the tanks and aircraft.
