When girls were young, they would bandage tightly their feet so that they could not grow. What would really happen is the bones would break and the foot was "folded" small enough to fit a baby sized shoe. It looks really awful without the shoe on; tiny feet were considered very attractive and a sign of being upper class; as the women really couldn't use the feet when they grew up, they were expected to do no menial work.
