The Cuban Missile Crisis helped to escalate and de-escalate tensions with the Soviet Union. It escalated the tensions because the Soviet Union repeatedly told the US that they would not place missiles in Cuba and that there was no reason for concern and then they went ahead and did it anyway. This caused tensions to escalate because the US and other countries could no longer trust the Soviet Union. Tensions de-escalated because the US was able to gain the support of so many other countries. This showed the Soviet Union that they had no support and that their testing the US and placing missiles in different places would not be tolerated at all. So, they removed their missiles from Cuba and the tensions partially de-escalated.

yes, basically to wrap it up. the United STates gave Russia an ultimatum. "stop building your weapons in cuba, or we'll start a war" and once this was heard russia agreed to stop building ICBM's in Cuba as long as the United States stopped building them in Turkey, (which is close to Russia)

in the end Russia stops building missles. United States does not.

When the United States discovered missiles on Cuba Russia was asked to remove them. They refused the request and because Cuba is in the sphere of influence of the United States missiles 90 miles from the Florida coast couldn't be allowed. JFK set up a Naval blockade around the island cutting off all supply lines and ships into the ports. Finally, Russia agreed to remove the missiles, but the boycott of Cuba has remained. An interesting fact is today Russian Navy ships port in Cuba.
