How did the Greeks and Romans collect taxes?

The Romans sent soldiers out to collect the taxes. They collected precious metals from the homes of the peasants. When the peasants were about to revolt the Romans would put on a circus. Gladiators would kill animals and each other and the crowd would go wild. They would leave the arena hollering "Did you see that gladiator throw that spear." Forgetting all about the tax collector for a while.
