According to Hopi tradition the Hopi clans migrated after entering this, the fourth world. Each went to the farthest they could go in their chosen direction. There are many stories about their travels and how they finally made it to where the Hopi live today. That site has had Hopi living there for about 1100 years. The stories tell of the clans arriving over a period of 800 years. The name of various clans reflect their travels. There is no reason to doubt that Hopi clans in fact lived other places once. The so called Anasazi sites are clearly direct ancestors of today's Pueblo people including the Hopi. The Hopi language is related to ones as far south as southern Mexico and as far north as Wyoming. The last group to arrive we know about from historic times. After the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 some Rio Grande Tewa speakers moved to Hopi lands and were allowed to settle there. They still speak Tewa, Hopi and English to this day.

The Hopi have lived on the southern part of Black Mesa at least since 1100 CE. They are the direct descendants of the Ancestral Puebloan peoples or Anasazi (the Hopi prefer Hisat-Sinom). Some of them may also be descended from the Mogollon and Hohokam cultures as well. They speak a Northern Uto-Aztecan language.

The Hopi say that various clans migrated in different directions for many years until gathering one by one at the Hopi mesas. It ended with a return to the center of the Universe where they live to this day. They archaeologists also say the Hopi came from different settlements across the high southwest.

The Hopi say that this is the fourth world that people have lived in. They emerged from each one below like climbing out of a kiva. When the Hopi moved from the third to the fourth way of life, they were offered corn by Ma'saw. The other peoples took the largest ears of corn and Hopis were left with the short blue ear. The Hopis knew that their fourth way of life would be difficult and that they must submit to the corn as a way of life. The themes of humility, cooperation, respect, and universal earth stewardship became the lifeway of all Hopis. The name Hopi comes from the Hopi word Hopituh Shi-nu-mu. This means: behaving one, one who is mannered, righteous, civilized, peaceable, polite, who adheres to the Hopi way. Living on the Hopi mesas is difficult and helps keep them on the proper path.
