Mostly by attracting attention. Lincoln was not well-known prior to the debates.

The debates themselves were not directly for the Presidential election in 1860, but rather to determine (in a fairly complicated way) who would be elected as US Senator from Illinois in 1859. Lincoln actually lost that election, but the debates helped give him national prominence so that when he found himself as the Republican nominee for President in 1860, people had heard of him and had a good idea of what his positions were. It didn't hurt that the Democratic nominee in 1860 was Stephen Douglas himself, so the 1858 debates did serve as a kind of proxy debate for the Presidential election.
