Mormon handcart pioneers pulled the handcarts by hand and walked the whole way. Each handcart company brought a few wagons to carry the sick and wounded. On average, 4 to 6 people were assigned to a handcart. They could only bring as much clothing and supplies as they could pull. It took several months of walking 10 to 20 miles each day to reach Salt Lake City.
