The Yankees were a charter team in the American League when it became a major league in 1901. They played the 1901 and 1902 seasons in Baltimore as the Orioles. The Orioles moved to New York in 1903 and were known as the Highlanders. The name was officially changed to Yankees in 1912 when they started playing their home games in the Polo Grounds.
