In the 16th and 17th Centuries, the French began to colonize the new world in the area they called New France which includes the city of Quèbec.
Quèbec City was founded in 1608 by Samuel de Champlain and was the first to become a permanent settlement. Over time, it became the capital of French Canada and all of New France.
Now the first people to settle this area were from France and used to a milder climate. The winters are known for being especially cold with a lot of snowfall each winter. Many of these first explorers and settlers found it difficult to deal with the snow and cold weather, so, creating winter festivities in the middle of the season helped to keep their spirits up. The early forms of Carnaval began in those early days. The official, more commercialized, Carnaval de Quèbec began in 1955.
