1. US Naval expansion with newly built steel battleships, commencing in about 1883. Battleships were equivalent to nuclear cold war weapons prior to the atomic bomb in 1945. 2. As the victor in the Spanish-American War of 1898, the US gained possession of the Spanish colonies: Philippines, Cuba (leasing rights), Guam, and Puerto Rico. 3. Using the new steel battleships, referred to in item #1, US fleets could now base themselves in the newly acquired possessions in the Pacific Ocean.

The three major US acquisitions in the Pacific region were Alaska, Hawaii and the Philippines. The latter one was due to the treaty with Spain after the Spanish American War of 1898. Alaska was purchased from Russia in 1867. The Hawaiian Islands were annexed by the US in 1898. Alaska and Hawaii became the 49th and 50th states on the US in 1959.
