The main obstacle in building the canal was

Colombia, whose senate refused to give the United

States a piece of its territory. In 1903 the U.S. government

supported a Panamanian rebellion against Colombia

and quickly recognized the independence of Panama!!

The French at first bought the land from Columbia to build the Canal. They lost many of their workers to diseases carried by mosquitos. The French left the job site, realizing they were losing more than they were gaining. The U.S. bought the job from the French, for a pretty good deal I might add. The French basically gave away the job because they knew the U.S. would fail to complete the Canal. Now the U.S. had problems buying the land from Columbia. We thought that we would get the same deal as the French did, but we got a more expensive deal. We built schools and homes near the job site so it would be comfortable living for the workers. We also found a way to reduce the mosquito population by draining sewage drains and spraying.

The US gained control of the land it needed to build the Panama Canal by?

Panama was a part of Colombia but was fighting for independence from 1899 to 1902. Colombia rejected a deal with the US to build the canal, so the US backed Panama's claim of independence in return for permanent ownership of a strip of land 50 miles long and 10 miles wide through which they could build and operate the canal. It was completed 11 years later.
