The society was very devastated and it was a worry for everyone. The senseless killing of any man in the prime of life with a wife and two children is a tragedy and injustice that affects any sensitive person. But life went on and the new president Johnson continued most of Kennedy's programs. so nothing much really changed. Johnson won by a landslide in the next election so most people must have liked what he did.

The Vietnam War would have been a lot different because he was getting ready to pull troops out.

The Civil Rights Laws of the 60's might not have been past as soon as they were. Now Kennedy was just as much for civil rights as Johnson. But Kennedy did not have the political pull that Johnson had.

John F Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963 in Dallas, Texas. Historians vary on the effects it had. Some say that the Great Society social programs implemented by Johnson never would have happened if he had lived.

It made the people very sad and angry. If they had learned Kennedy was shot by an assassin hiding in the trunk of the car, then the whole country would have probably erupted into chaos.

Why was the assassination of John F. Kennedy a big deal to Americans?

There are so many reasons why JFK's assassination was a major blow to the American people. Mostly it was the fact that this was the youngest persiding president and that he carried with him the hopes of his generation. He was very easy to relate to and his family was as close as Americans ever got to a surrogate royal family; to a lot of people they still are. Suffice to say that the assassination of the leader of any truly free country is an atrocity in the eyes of its people. JFK was not an exception, but rather a fine example of this sentiment.
