All the Sioux tribes shared a common language (with only slight dialect differences) so they could speak to other Sioux without any problems. Some also learned words in Cheyenne (there had long been some intermarriage between the two groups) and Arapaho, but in most dealings with other tribes the plains Sign Language was used.

Sign languages were universal throughout the Americas, but the Plains version is the best recorded and most well known today. Signs could be used at close quarters or at a distance - two natives could speak to each other at a considerable distance by this means.

Pre-arranged smoke signals could give very brief messages (not really a language) and all the Plains natives used various traditional signals with their blanket or their horse, or a combination of both - a returning war party might stop some distance away from a village to signal with a blanket dropped to the ground (indicating a member of the party had been killed) or many other signals. A man riding his horse in a circle wished to speak to the man he signalled to; a scout returning to a war party kicking a buffalo chip along the ground had discovered signs of the enemy nearby.

Probably smoke signals, and animal sounds. They might have also cupped their hands over their mouths and spoke so their voice carried further.

The Indian kingdoms used messengers to send word from one king to another. Pigeons were also used to transmit messages. The latter skill was borrowed from the Sumerians.
