Already owned slaves were permitted, otherwise no slaves allowed in the state of Texas.

In Article I, Section 9, Clause 1 used the phrase "The migration and importation of such persons as any of the states now existing shall think proper to admit," to refer to the practice of slavery. So in one sense, it is argued that the Constitution has never mentioned the issue of slavery, per se, but everyone knew that that phrase meant "slavery" when the Constitution was adopted.

The farmers decided against abolishing slavery because they would have no one to work in the fields to harvest the crops and it was unheard of for them to do it themselves. In a nut shell they would lose money!
Many people in both the North and the South were strongly opposed to slavery. For example, one Framer, Gouverneur Morris, denounced slavery as "The curse of Heaven on the states" where it existed. It is also interesting to note that nowhere in the Constitution did the writer use the words 'slave' or 'slavery'. Some people say that this is because the Framers were ashamed of slavery.
Although the Civil war wasn't started over slavery, that was the biggest issue that was resolved. The second one would be the fact that the South rejoined the North and the United States became one again.
In 1865 the US Constitution was amended to abolish slavery. The amendment was the 13th one to the Constitution.
Frederick Douglass felt that the biggest issue with regard to slavery was that it was morally indefensible. He believed that no one should be owned by another man, so slavery was fundamentally flawed.
