Hawaii was originally named the Sandwich Islands after one of Captain James Cook's sponsors, John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, who was at the time the First Lord of the Admiralty and Cook's superior officer.

The Sandwich Islands, most of which are know today as the Hawaiian Islands, were given the original name by James Cook. Cook had sought to honor the First Lord of the Admiralty, James Montagu, otherwise know as the Earl of Sandwich.
