The Crusades were a warring period. Therefore, when they were happening people couldn't or didn't want to go around them to trade. Therefore, trade was decreased because the people could not or did not want to travel through or around the war.
However, between the various Crusades and after them (the Wars occurred roughly 40% of the time of the Crusades period), trade increased markedly because of new European exposure to Asian spices and products (like silk). The post-Crusade trading is one of the major factors that ended the Middle Ages and prompted the Renaissance.

∙ 13y agoIn the Medieval World, the main effect it had was probably the looting of Constantinople during the Fourth Crusade. Constantinople was a major trading port, and was in the middle of east and west. Also, many children were sold into slavery during the children's crusade. Really, the effect it had on global trade (which wasn't as global at the time) was humongous.

∙ 14y agoWhen the Christian Crusaders left their homelands to travel to Jerusalem, many of the soldiers brought their wives and families with them. Many political figure heads also came along with their entire households. The groups of travelers often equaled small mobile cities. There were no modern supply methods such as air drop or vehicles. Keeping this many people fed was a real issue. Many of the Muslim cities lived with practicing Christians within their boundaries and did not shut off trade with them. As the Crusaders passed through, they would enter the Muslim cities and buy food and other staples to hold them over until they could reach the next town.
