The USS Maine was docked in Cuba, which was held by the Spanish. THe USS Maine exploded suspected to be caused by the Spanish, (It really wasn't). But the news papers in the US blamed the Spanish for it. The public was outraged along with the fact that the Spanish Ambassador said the US President was weak, and that the Spanish had work camps for Cubans. The US Government did what the US people wanted, and went to war.

Publishing his book in 1890, "The Influence of Sea Power Upon History, 1660-1783" which helped to promote the battleship arms race in the 1890's up through 1918. 1783 is the ending year of the American Revolutionary War. Oklahoma was recovered but considered too old to repair. Totals 3 sunk, 15 damaged. Refence: Samuel Eliot Morison, HUSNOWWII

What was battleship Maine?

The Maine was a U.S. Battleship that blew up in Havana harbor. Most of the U.S. newspapers at the time blamed the explosion on the Spanish, who controlled Cuba at the time. The explosion of the Maine was one of the main triggers for the Spanish-American war that followed. Carefull modern investigation indicated that the suspicion that the Spanish blew up the Maine was almost certainly wrong and that it was likely due to some kind of accident on the Maine itself.
