It caused problems because whichever animal they killed to get the pelt to sell, was slowly dieing out. So that was a problem, because then there wouldn't be anything left to sell. Unless they thought of another animal to use as a trade item.

It appears that the First Nations peoples did not smelt metals from ores. For this reason, metal objects would have been scarce or non-existent, and highly prized. Therefore, the earliest trading was for small metal objects from the fisherman seeking cod off Newfoundland. Later, trade continued for manufactured metal items including axe heads and kettles, and also textiles such as blankets.

Did people live with their families in fur trade posts?

Most men were not married when they first became involved in the fur trade. European women were extremely rare in the fur trade, and almost all of those women arrived with their husbands. Many fur trade men formed relationships with First Nations women, some going through a form of marriage in accorance with First Nations customs. Many children were born from such relationships. It was quite common for a man to leave his family behind when he left the trading post to which he had been assigned, and to form a new relationship at the next trading post. It was also not uncommon for a man to have more than one wife at the same time, at the same post.

How did the fur trade shape the Canadian identity?

no. ------ No, there is no "Canadian" identity. Canada is a Confederation of many Nations and cultures, each with their own identity. The fur trade has played a large role in many of those Nations and Cultures but each has it's own interpretation. For example if your culture was trapping and trading the furs you would have one view. On the other hand if your ancestors were taking the furs to Europe for resale you would have a different view on how the fur trade shaped your identity. If your ancestors bought furs from others and traded to yet others who then sold the furs on the open market you would have yet another view on how the fur trade shaped your identity. If your forefathers never traded in furs and only used the routes created by fur traders you would have yet another view of the fur trade. The fur trade help create Canada but Canada is a Confederation of many nations, each with it's own history.
