Geography was everything. The terrain had to be as close to perfect as they could find. As it was the project was shut down until Teddy Roosevelt stepped in to complete the job. The semi-tropical climate was the biggest obsticle. Many of the workers died from malaria (yellow fever). Between problems with disease and lack of money the Panama people had to scrap the idea. It's hard to imagine Central America without the canal. For years the property of the United States, it has since been returned to the Panamanian people.
