People had to rely on mail which often took weeks, months or even a year depending on where they lived. When the telephone was first introduced only the very wealthy could afford them and eventually the middle-class were able to have them installed in their home. It kept families connected (often families were split apart by war, or men had to go off to other States or Provinces or even other countries to find work). Just as the computer is a library at our finger tips, the first telephone was just as much magic and excitement.

The telephone has opened up new windows in communication. For example, people who wanted to contact friends or family far away had to go through the hassle of writing letters. Now, with the press of a button, you can contact people far away and talk to them as if you were face to face. There can be some social trouble though. A teenager might call her friend instead of walking the two blocks to her friend's house, simply because it's easier. Also, now we have extraordinarily high phone bills from all that texting and calling we do XD

Well, back then when we didn't have telephones, people would actually TALK to each other. Without them, we would have a good side, and a bad side. The good part is if we didn't have telephones, people around the world couldn't talk much. If we did, we would be able to do a little more. I hope i helped you out. :)
