They really didn't in the long run. They robbed Native Americans of their real Indian names, forcing them to take Christian names, and also robbed them of their innate spirituality and religious heritages.

The Missionaries main goal was to convert tribe members to Christianity. Some where allies. But they were also destructive to traditional beliefs and culture. They meant well however, they believed in order to save the tribe from the new immigrants, they must convert and assimilate all natives. The result was that some tribes have lost some of their History, culture and religion forever.

One of the methods used to convert was to take our traditional stories (oral traditions) and find anything similar in them that they could link to The Bible. They would alter our stories. Today, we have several versions of our traditional stories. And we can tell which ones have been Christianized by the language used in the story. Such as white and dark spirits being considered purity and evil. This is a European concept, not Native American. Natives didn't believe that everything dark meant evil and everything white meant good. White could mean mist and dark could mean shadow and nothing more.

What do the missionaries do to help the Indians?

Missionaries have worked in the Amazon for many years. They supply medicine to treat the diseases brought by the white people, which continue to kill hundreds of Indians. They also teach the Indians to read and write so they can better protect themselves. Missionary airplanes fly supplies into the missions and in emergencies take people out of the jungle. ( I believe! )
