In many ways. There were shoemakers, tanners, blacksmiths, doctors, cooks, carpenters, shop owners, and teachers, etc. All these job allowed a man or a woman to earn a small income to support themselves and their family.

They didn't work for a salary like people today. Near the coast they often fished for food and more inland they hunted, grew crops and raised domestic animals which were slaughtered for food.

In addition they developed trades in order to trade for other things. They built ships, spun cloth, did blacksmithing, became fur trappers, weavers, etc.
