In Europe it was strict orthodox Catholic for everybody peasant or noble until the protestant revolution. Mass was attended at least once a week on Sunday and all children were baptized at birth and taught the Bible at the local chapel or cathedral every week until their confirmation usually at 16. Everybody would have to fast and not eat any meat or animal products except for fish during the 40 days of Lent leading up to Easter and everybody had to not eat any meat except fish every Wednesday and Friday all year long.
