The Lower South was where pro-slavery feeling ran most strongly ("Down the river"). So for them, the election result was disastrous. The newly-formed Republican Party was refusing to allow any new slave-states. So when the new Western states opened-up as free soil, the South would be outvoted in Congress, which would pass laws that favoured the North.

Slavery was the major issue in the 1860 election. The Republican Party platform promised not to interfere with slavery in the states, but opposed the further extension of slavery into the territories. Republican Party candidate Abraham Lincoln won the 1860 presidential election defeating John Breckinridge, John Bell and Stephen Douglas. Abraham Lincoln received 180 electoral votes from 18 of the 33 states. Abraham Lincoln did not receive electoral votes from any southern state. Lincoln was not on the ballot in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas. South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas declared its secession from the United States following the November 1860 election of Republican candidate Abraham Lincoln to the U.S. presidency. The Civil War began with the Confederate attack upon Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861, a Union fort in the harbor of Charleston, South Carolina. After the Civil War began in April, Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina also declared their secession and joined the Confederacy.

Slavery was the major issue in the 1856 election. Democratic Party candidate James Buchanan endorsed popular sovereignty giving the power to determine the legality of slavery to the inhabitants of the territory seeking statehood, rather than to Congress. The Republican Party opposed the extension of slavery into the territories. Buchanan warned that if the Republicans won the election, their anti-slavery position would lead to civil war. Buchanan won 19 states including all of the southern states.

Both the North and South viewed Lincoln similarly. He put himself out there as one who would unite the country. It was a tough race.

The southerners felt very bad about the results of the election of 1860. They could not imagine being led by a Republican and this was one of the causes of civil war.
