What was one obstacle abolitionists faced in ending slavery?

The abolitionist lobby may have had great influence, but it was not very numerous. At the outbreak of the Civil War, most Northerners did not feel strongly about slavery. The war itself was not directly about slavery until Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation (Sept. 1862, effective Jan. 1863) - and even that was mainly a tactical move to keep the British from supporting the Confederates.

What effect did the fugitive slave law of 1793 have on slavery for runaway slaves?

Not much. It was fairly ineffectual. That was why they introduced the much-tougher Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, to make the South feel that Congress was doing something positive for them, in exchange for allowing the first coast-to-coast railroad to pass through Chicago instead of going the New Mexico route.

Why did the southerners feel the way they did about the Fugitive slave law?

The fugitive slave law gave southerners some protection against being bankrupted by thousands of escaping slaves. The law gave northern banks greater willingness to support slavery by loaning money to slave owners. The law also had the effect of co-opting the support of northern newspapers, which carried the very profitable ads for return of escaped slaves. Basically, the fugitive slave act gave national endorsement to the whole system of slavery.

How did the union feel when South Carolina seceded?

South Carolina seceded because they believed that the institution of slavery was in peril. I believe the Civil War was about states rights - that is, the states rights to maintain slavery. South Carolina was complaining about the northern states violating the Constitution by not enforcing the Fugitive Slave Act. The union felt that South Carolina was independent and did not want slavery so now they are in war.
