In 1567 the Spanish explorer Juan Prado mentioned two native villages or towns by the name of Tanasqui. Like most native names, this word was mis-spelled and misunderstood by Europeans over the next few hundred years, eventually becoming "Tennessee" and used as the name of the state.

The true meaning of the word Tanasqui may never be known, but it is possibly a Yuchi word for a meeting-place.
