The United States took the lead in creating the United Nations in 1945. The principle of deterrence has been a basic part of American foreign policy since World War II. Toward the end of World War II, the United States had hoped to work with its wartime ally the Soviet Union, through the UN, to build international cooperation and to keep the peace in the postwar world. It changed the power structure as prior to World War 2 most countries didn't have any or much high tech weapons like they did during WW2. When WW2 come, it forced countries to develop their military weapons and to try make a power stand of dominance. The main powers in WW2 was US, Nazi Germany and USSR but when the Nazis were defeated, it just left the US and USSR. By end of war, both countries were built up with military weapons and soon they become anxious of one side attacking so that caused the nuclear weapon race. After the USSR ended, the worlds power began to become less visible but there are same 2 countries still at top of world powers but only difference to after WW2 is the name of one of the countries.
