The 13 colonies were founded in between the years 1607 and 1733 (each was founded at a different time) by Britain. In 1775, however, these colonies began a rebellion against Britain and finally declared their independence on July 4, 1776, turning them into the first 13 states of the US.

America did not get them. The United States was formed into a new nation from the existing 13 colonies. The United States declared their indenpance from England on 4 July 1776. They were not recognized as a new nation until the end of the war in 1781.

The Thirteen Colonies were colonies of the British Empire, not of the United States, therefore The United States acquired that land over a period of time known as "the American Revolution" at the conclusion of which in 1783 one could rightfully say the land had been fully "acquired"
