The wealthy Roman families, notably the patrician families, had the money and the clients to assure election. It took wealth and the cooperation of the family for a man to be elected to an office. This covered being married to the right woman, whose family could enhance the man's status and thus his electability. The clients themselves, were votes and added to the candidate's prestige by surrounding him in public, giving him the status of an "important" fellow. Even if some of the clients did not have the vote, they still could do the leg work and applaud and cheer when their patron made a speech, thereby making him seem very popular and important.
