After the end of the Civil War in the United States, some women had to change from becoming the homemaker to being the breadwinner for a family. This was especially true for men who had families who went off to war and did not come back. The woman of the household now had to run the family farm or business.
Women's Suffrage campaigns commenced, resulting in new laws of equality in 1920. Militarily, women were allowed to become nurses starting with the US Civil War; becoming authorized volunteers in the WACs and WAVES (Army & Navy) in WWII through the Vietnam War, ending officially in about 1975.
After the war, many women remained in the workforce. There was a shift in roles due to the fact many men had lost their lives or were injured.
*Women took roles and entered profssions previously dominated by men.*

The life for women during the civil war wasn't to good, it wasn't to good for the lawmakers the soldiers the farmers of the slaves either of course. Women still had little freedom compared to white men. The couldn't vote or run for office. And of course many of the married women's husbands and sons went of to war. 600,000 of which would not return. Women had to keep their families fed and there houses in good condition with no help from thier husbands (who were young enough to go to war) or thier sons (who were old enough to go to war) life during the civil war for women was pretty crappy indeed. Back then it was only good for weapon makers and funeral directors.
