Buddhists are not Spock like beings that rationalize grief into nothing and mutter phrases like "Ahh - this pain results from my uncontrolled desire to have things better than they are. I must conquer this weakness!". Like all people grief arising from loss or the death of others passes through phases for Buddhists - numbness and denial, anger, great sorrow, depression, dispair and confusion turn into acceptance and even transcendence as sorrow reveals opportunities for appreciation and compassion. These phases are similar to those experienced in any of life's changes - separation, transition, or return.

Those somewhat familiar with Buddhism sometimes point to the unhappiness around "attachment" as something that must be overcome. Attachment means the desire for a person to be with someone or something and absence from this nearness produces sadness. This would seem to indicate that the sadness in bereavement or grief is somehow wrong or undesirable. In his teachings the Buddha taught that this attachment is only a cause for sadness when it is limited and vanishes when the attachment is directed outwards towards all others.

How do teen deal with grief?

Depends on the type. Sometimes, the best way to deal with grief is to talk to somebody about it, or write everything you are feeling down. Often, this will help you make sense of things. You could also try the "curl-up-on-the-couch-with-a-good-book-or-a-good-movie-with-somebody-that-cares-about-you-" approach. Music or reading also helps sometimes. Hope this helps!
