1) duty and hard work
2) Respectability: conformity to social standards. For example possession of goods manners, no swearing (they even had swear boxes), regular attendance to church, charitable activity, gambling and drinking too much was frowned upon.
3) Charity & Philanthropy : an activity that involved many people, especially women.
4) the man of the family was very much in charge. The husband represented the authority and respectability, consequently a single women with a child was looked down upon because of a widespread sense of female Chasity. sexuality was generally repressed and that led to extreme prudery.
