They form the cloud of electrons, which move freely across the total quantity of the metal blocks. That forms the physical bonding between the molecules of the metal. So the whole block behaves like a single large molecule of the metal or the alloy. This cloud is responsible for most of the properties of the metals.
A metal contains delocalized electrons, or electrons that are not associated with any single atom, these electrons move easily when an electric potential is applied.
When reactive metals are exposed to air, they react rapidly. Especially with oxygen and water vapor. They are stored in oil to be kept away from air.
