They don't have gills, so they cant breath under water. They slow their heart rate and close certain blood lines in their bodies to allow more blood to get to the more important organs. By doing this, alligators can stay underwater for up to 2 hours.

They don't. They can hold their breath for long periods, and can slow their metabolism to minimize how often they have to breathe.
