crumble zones on a car are zones in which the designated zone crumbles to reduce the schock from the objecct the car is hitting or being hit by. they crumble at different levels of difficulty depending on how far they are from the passengers in the car.

it does so by absoarbing the impact usually front on or rear. by bending the metal or other maluable materials the force of the impact is spread over a longer time frame. newtons second law F=M*a, demonstrates how a longer deacceleration time will dramatically affect the force being exerted on the passenger.

the crumple zone also absorbs alot of energy by bending and disfiguring itself and therefor converts some of the lethal kenetic energy into other forms of energy heat, sound etc.

The following answer is supposed to be humorous, but contains the information you want.

You are traveling down the road at 70 MPH and hit a wall. You are now splattered over a square mile of countryside.

In your steel box (Automobile) you hit the wall and the box stops and you hit the inside of the box and still die.

Take the steel box and put a sheet metal spring on the front (Crumple Zone) When the box hits the wall is has three feet of spring to compress, mean while you hit the inside of the box relatively slowly and are not hurt to badly, the spring continues to slow the box down. The box comes to a stop and because the spring is designed to not rebound everything goes quiet. and you crawl out of the wreck and sue for whiplash.

What are crumple zones and how do they work in cars?

Crumple zones are zones built into cars that crumple in a controlled manner. The main crumple zones are at the front and the rear of a vehicle. On impact, they crumple up in a controlled manner, which stops the force energy reaching the occupants and injuring them. The crumple zone dissipates the energy Advantage :they save lives by stopping forceful energy Disadvantage: they can kill occupants in severe accidents because in high speed impacts they can dislodge the dashboard from the frame of the body Potential collapse of the footwells, trapping the driver and passenger Crumple zones can be recognised by bent body panels.
