Fire alarm annunciators can be designed to include a strobe light or other flashing light that indicates the alarm is going off. Also, some fire codes allow lighted EXIT signs to flash on and off during a fire alarm, as further visual indication of the alarm and as a visual cue to where the exit is located.

There are specially designed fire alarms that may cover a wider range of sound for those with impaired hearing, but modern commercial fire alarms are also required to have visible signalling as well, such as strobe light or rotating beacon. A deaf person may be interested in having a special alarm system that will vibrate their sleeping area, for installation in their dwelling.

Why are smoke alarms so loud that it hurts my ears?

Smoke alarms are designed to be loud in order to alert people to potential danger and ensure they hear the alarm even if they are asleep or in another part of the house. While the high decibel level may be uncomfortable or even painful, it is necessary to grab attention and prompt immediate action in case of a fire. The priority is to ensure people's safety by making sure they can hear the alarm even in noisy or chaotic situations.
