First of all, it depends on the elephant. Forest elephants have the forest for shelter, while savanna elephants do not. Elephants, in general, are large enough that they don't need protection from predators and therefore don't need shelter. They also don't need shelter for breeding, as baby elephants are plenty protected by large ones and capable of moving around on their own. Also, some animals need shelter to protect them from the natural elements. Elephants are build strong enough that that does not apply to them, so they don't really need any. In other words, elephants are designed so that they don't need shelter.

All animals need somewhere to get out of the weather and elephants are no different. In the wild they will find large trees and things like that to shelter themselves from heat and other harsh elements.

The elephants use their trunk to suck up leaves,wood and logs, so they use that to make shelter

Elephants dont exactly take cover but when they do it would be under trees but they dont lay down (Wild) Tamed Elephants in Zoos and stuff take cover under shelter. (Tamed)
