Basically: You describe them as dark, gloomy places. Perhaps you can say that the character heard a creak or something. Just think of it like you're in it, and describe your surroundings.

∙ 9y agoThere are different forms of a house being "haunted." For example, a house may contain residual forms of energy, and some houses may be inhabited by spirits or entities (such as poltergeist). Spirits (ghosts) have different levels of energy. Low level ghosts (shadow people) do not possess a high enough frequency to manifest into an apparition. Apparitions only possess enough energy to manifest for a few seconds, ordinarily, unless they are drawing energy from a source, like energetic children, pre-teens and teenagers, etc.
I live in a haunted house can can attest that there are spirits who live here, are 'stuck' here, and (like real people), they attract other spirits who come and go at will. To describe a haunted house, it is like any other home with the exception there are spirits who live there, make their presence known in various ways, and usually want the living people in the house to leave. Ghosts look at occupants as intruders, and they often act-out.
