There are no indigenous inhabitants of Antarctica. The few that live there are research scientists. They survive by living in specially designed housing structures and wearing specialised clothing. Also because humans are warm blooded and lose heat very quickly in freezing temperatures, they have to eat a diet extreamely high in calories to give their bodies enough energy to keep warm.

Temporary workers are issued extreme cold weather gear, which protect their bodies and skin from the extreme cold in this polar climate.

On some research stations, depending on the temperature, there are different rules for being out of doors. For example, any temperature to 75 below zero means 'business as usual'. Between 75 and 100 below, workers must travel outside in pairs. Colder than 100 below zero, means that no one is allowed out of doors. This is the guideline from the National Science Foundation, which represents USA in Antarctica.

People who live and work on Antarctica temporarily eat more calories per day in order to maintain their body warmth -- about 1,000 more; they wear layers of clothing including personal gear and gear issued by their governments (who hire them) especially designed for extreme cold weather.

As well, during periods of extreme cold -- temperatures lower than 100 degrees below 0 F, people do not travel out of doors, and are confined to their indoor locations.
