Poems are made of human thoughts. It is the spontaneous natural outflow of emotions evolving from objective observations. Refinement of character is what progress in society is. Poetry can move human mind through emotions easily and fast. A moved mind only will refine. Poetry does this by imparting velocity, speed and momentum to the otherwise still and inert human mind and helps it take off. Tragedy was, for centuries, advised as the best form of literature because it purged human mind through strong and alternating emotions by causing emotional catharsis. Poetry is the budding, flowering and ripening of human mind in the social setting. So Poetry is of paramount importance to society. Poetry informs, delights and develops the human soul, mind and the person. Poetry imparts velocity to human mind which is otherwise still. A mind with velocity will gain momentum which will lift it like an aero plane. That is why it is said that poetry elevates human mind, which is one of the main functions of poetry. Once the mind thus becomes kinetic, it can look after itself and be informed or developed as it wishes.
