  • Kangaroos have a network of fine veins just beneath the surface of the skin on their forearms. They lick this area, and the saliva evaporates, cooling down the blood vessels.

Kangaroos are essentially nocturnal, being active during the night time. They are crepuscular, meaning they feed in the early morning, before it is too hot, and in the evening, as the earth cools down.

  • During the day, they laze around under trees, chewing their cud.
  • Their large ears help with heat dissipation.
  • Contrary to overseas opinion, kangaroos do not live in the barren, sandy desert. There is always vegetation for them to shelter underneath.

Quokkas live in a temperate area, so there is little difficulty in these animals keeping warm. During the colder winter months, they shelter in long grass surrounded by shrubbery, so they are protected from the cold southern winds.

The habitat in which the quokka lives is not excessively hot. Quokkas are small members of the kangaroo family, and are found only in the far southwest of Western Australia, which has a temperate climate. Whilst the population on Rottnest Island lives in a variety of semi-arid habitats and even gardens, the island has a very mild climate. On the mainland, they only live where there is dense, wet ground cover in the bushland, or along swampy flats.Quokkas are mostly nocturnal, and hide in the shrubbery, making passages through long grass for their protection. They do not drink much water, but feed on grasses, sedges, succulents and the leaves of shrubs.

Quokkas have adapted to live in hot environments by hiding out during the day. They are also able to survive on very little water.

Do kangaroos like hot weather?

There are about 60 different species of kangaroo in Australia, and they each have unique adaptations for different ecosystems and climates. Different species can live in all parts of Australia. Kangaroos live in a variety oftemperatures ranging from sub-Alpine to savanna grassland to temperate bushland and coastal heath. Some varieties of kangaroos seem to enjoy swimming, whilst others are just as happy in the dry mulga scrub. Tree kangaroos live in the tropical rainforest where temperatures are higher, along with the humidity. Many larger species of kangaroos such as the red kangaroo, commonly said to live in the desert, cannot survive in the sandy desert at all. There is insufficient food or water for them to survive. However, they can certainly live in hot semi-arid areas where there are permanent waterholes, and where the vegetation is soft and juicy enough for them to eat.

How do red kangaroos survive in the hot?

Kangaroos are essentially nocturnal. They are more active in the cooler hours of the early morning and the late afternoon. During the heat of the day they are more sedentary, lying around quietly and chewing their cud. In hot weather, kangaroos use saliva to cool down, licking their forearms where there is little muscle tissue and blood veins run close to the surface. When the saliva evaporates from the fur, it cools down the kangaroo.
