The entire actuator unit, with the wire running into it, is threaded into a housing on the axle tube. It has a large hex end (about 1.25") and standard RH threads, and can be removed with a large adjustable wrench, or a socket if you are going to toss it and want to cut the wire. There is a gasket inside, so e careful when pulling it out; also the mechanism inside is lubricated with gear oil from the differential, so in case you lose some, you should be prepared to top off the diff oil. If the original thermal linear actuator failed on you, you may want to replace it with a mechanical one like the cable operated posi-lok(T): <http://www.4x4posi-lok.com/>
You shouldn't own a chevy if you can't figure out how to remove the bumper
On Chevy there is a actuator that sits on the front axel that go,s bad you unplug the wires an unscrew the actuator that run about 114.00 dollars
It is screewed into the front Differential, towards passenger side but in the middle of the housing.
Remove the door panels
No.
NO it don't. The actuator is up on the front axel housing. Now the transfur case does have a switch on it that sends power to the actuator up front.
Differentials were locked by vacuum pressure on a actuator on the front axle, if there is a problem with this actuator or with your vacuum system the front axle will not engage. You may want to remove the acy=tuator and clean it out, ot locate the vacuum leak in your system.
on the front axel
Lift the front of the vehicle up and support it with jack stands under the lower a-frames. Remove front wheels. Unbolt front shocks and remove them. Reverse order to install.
It is in the front differential housing. Craw under the front of the truck and look at the housing towards the passenger side and you will see it. It will have electric wires going to it.
We call it a horse dong, but to a partsman it would be a 4wd actuator and it is located in the front pumkin. There is a upgrade kit that can be purchased that will make it a manual engage and is generally cheaper than buying the actuator.
