it is florecent gasses that take thousands of years for the light to travel to earth so by the time we see the stars, they could already be long gone

It is a nuclear reaction that is incredibly hot, and gives off photons (light). Think atom bomb exploding, and that would be a tiny part of the light given off by a star.
