Sunflowers (Helianthus annuus) utilize light energy in the purple (reds and blues) range. Colors on the purple end of the spectrum have the highest light energy.

  • Blue light - responsible for vegetative or leaf growth (fluorescent light)
  • Red plus Blue light - encourages flowering (full spectrum or "grow lights)

Sunflowers are green plants so they get their food the same way as other plants: their roots absorb water and nutrients from the ground, and their leaves use sunlight and chlorophyll to create energy via photosynthesis.

Sunflowers are like every other plant. They need the following food sources:

  • Light energy - sunflowers require full sun of at least 6 hours per day
  • Water - necessary for metabolic processes and hydration of the plant tissues
  • Soil Nutrients - it is from the soil that the sunflower gets all the minerals it needs.
  • Helping - mulch provides organic matter and earthworms take the organic matter into the soil, aides in the release of nutrients and burrows through the soil making it more friable and easier for plant roots to take hold.
Sunflowers do not require hard-to-find nutrients or growing conditions.
