The walls of the left ventricle are thicker due to having to pump the blood to the body. The walls of the right ventricle are thinner because blood is being pumped into the lungs for gas exchange.

The walls of the atria are much thinner than those of the ventricles because the ventricles have to handle high blood pressures to send it all over the body and to the lungs unlike the atria just receive blood.

The ventricles pump blood to more distant parts of the body, like the lungs and all the body tissues, whereas the atria merely pump the blood into the ventricles which are immediately below them, through the atrioventricular valves. Therefore, the ventricles need to be able to exert a larger amount of force to do their job. That is why they require thicker walls composed of stronger muscles.
