West Africans have common languages that cut across different nations. For instance, there are Yorubas in Nigeria which are found in both Benin Republic and Togo.Hausa is widely spoken in many West African Nations such as Nigeria, Chad, Niger and Ghana. Communicating with one another was not really a problem before colonisation and after the colonial masters left, French and English Language are now the means of communication between the West African states divided into French speaking and English speaking.

There are 11 official languages and several which didn't make it to official status. People talk in their home language to others of the same culture. When talking across cultures, English, Zulu and Afrikaans are useful widely known languages.

Government business is mostly in English, though anybody can request a translation into one of the 11 official languages.

As to HOW. Well, mostly by cellphone (mobile).

Despite the wide variety of cultures in West Africa, from Nigeria through to Senegal, there are general similarities in dress, cuisine, music and culture that are not shared extensively with groups outside the geographic region. This long history of cultural exchange predates the colonization era of the region and can be approximately placed at the time of the Ghana Empire2. (proper: Wagadou Empire), Mali Empire or perhaps before such empires.
